History of Whisky Sour

The Whisky Sour Cocktail: A timeless classic

The Whisky Sour is a classic, timeless cocktail whose origins date back to the 19th century. This iconic drink, skilfully balancing sour and sweet flavours, has a fascinating history.

Whisky Sour takes its name from the English word "sour", meaning "acid" or "bitter". Its history is closely linked to seafaring, where British and Scottish sailors, seeking to combat scurvy during their sea voyages, discovered the use of lemon or lime juice, rich in vitamin C.

When these sailors began calling at South American ports, they found an abundance of fresh lemons and decided to combine this fruit with their whisky. So they blended whisky, fresh lemon juice and sugar to create a refreshing, stimulating drink.

Whisky Sour is appreciated for its harmonious balance of flavors. The acidity of the lemon harmonizes deliciously with the sweetness of the sugar, while the whisky adds depth of flavor and a distinctive warmth.

Cheers and enjoy a delicious Whisky Sour, a true cocktail icon!
